Northern field hockey standout Alicia Frey is this week’s Athlete of the Week!

Frey had a terrific week by scoring 9 goals in 3 games. The senior had 5 of those goals in 1 game alone, and helped Northern win all 3 of their games.

Comets On A Quest For The Trifecta
Penn Manor

When it comes to field hockey, the Penn Manor Comets have excellent tradition, but they have never been in this position: the #1 ranked high school team in the nation!

Topofthecircle.com put the Comets in the #1 spot in their national preseason rankings. It’s a special honor for the Comets and they are the first in the Susquehanna Valley to even earn it, but the team doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal. Jill Witmer and Coach Matt Soto explain why:

Maddie Hess adds that it’s not that surprising because they just won states, but admits that it’s exciting.

“#1 team in the country…that’s cool!”

The Comets followed up a runner-up finish in 2007 with a state title in 2008, a year they came up short in the league and district tournaments. The team is now focused on completing the trifecta this year, but Maddie and Jill both agree they have to take it one game at a time.

Donegal Girl’s Soccer Honored
Donegal

On June 29, 2009, the Donegal girl’s soccer team traveled to Harrisburg for their recent accomplishment.

The team was honored and given citations by the House of Representatives and the Senate for their resent PIAA AA State soccer title.

Dave Hinkernell and Tom Creighton were the House representative sponsors, and Mike Folmer was the Senate sponsor.

Red Lion To Forfeit Several Field Hockey Games

The Red Lion girl’s field hockey team will have to forfeit a number of games because of an ineligible player.

The forfeits will knock the lions out of the district tournament so their season is over.

Last year, Red Lion’s boy’s basketball team ran into a similar problem and also had to forfeit victories, ultimately cancelling a terrific season and ending their season just before the District playoffs.
